The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially rolled out face authentication as an additional biometric option for Aadhaar verification. This move aims to make Aadhaar-based authentication more accessible, especially for senior citizens and manual laborers whose fingerprints may be worn or difficult to scan.
What Is Face Authentication?
Face authentication uses your live facial image โ captured through a smartphone or biometric device โ to verify your identity against the photograph stored in UIDAI's database. Unlike fingerprint or iris-based authentication, face authentication doesn't require specialized hardware, making it deployable on standard Android smartphones.
How It Works
When a service provider initiates Aadhaar authentication, you can now choose the face option. The app captures a live selfie, checks for liveness (to prevent spoofing with photos), and sends the encrypted image to UIDAI servers for matching. The entire process takes under 10 seconds.
Where Can You Use It?
Face authentication is being adopted by telecom operators for SIM card verification, banks for account opening and KYC updates, and various government services. UIDAI has mandated that all authentication service providers must support at least two modalities, with face being one of the recommended options.
Privacy and Security
UIDAI has emphasized that face authentication uses the same encryption standards as fingerprint and iris authentication. The facial data is transmitted in encrypted form and is never stored by the requesting entity. All authentication happens against UIDAI's central database with strict audit trails.
Impact on Users
For everyday users, this means fewer authentication failures. Senior citizens who often face rejection due to worn fingerprints can now use face authentication seamlessly. UIDAI data shows that face authentication has a 99.7% success rate in controlled environments, compared to 96.2% for fingerprints.
How to Enable Face Authentication
No special registration is needed. If your Aadhaar card has a photograph stored (which all cards issued after 2014 do), you're automatically eligible. Simply choose the 'Face' option when prompted during authentication at any supported service point.
