An Indian Passport is an essential travel document issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through the Passport Seva programme. You can apply for a fresh passport, renew an existing passport, or request an additional booklet through the online portal. An appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) is mandatory.
You will be safely redirected to the official government website.
Create an account on passportindia.gov.in using your email address. Verify your email and set a strong password. This account will be used for all passport-related services.
Log in and select 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport'. Fill the application form carefully with all personal details, family information, and present/permanent address.
Upload all required documents in the specified format. Upload a recent passport-size photograph meeting the guidelines (white background, no glasses, specific dimensions).
Pay the applicable fee online via credit/debit card, net banking, UPI, or SBI challan. The fee varies based on the number of pages (36 or 60) and service type (Normal or Tatkal).
Book an appointment at your nearest PSK or POPSK for document verification and biometric capture. Choose a convenient date and time from the available slots.
On your appointment date, visit the PSK with all original documents and the printed application receipt. Your documents will be verified, photo and fingerprints captured, and application forwarded for processing.
After PSK visit, police verification is initiated. An officer may visit your residence or contact you. This typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on your district. Your passport is dispatched after successful verification.
For adults (18+), the passport is valid for 10 years. For minors under 18, it's valid for 5 years or until the minor turns 18, whichever is earlier.
While Aadhaar is the primary document, you can apply without it by providing alternative documents. However, Aadhaar significantly speeds up the process and police verification.
PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) is a full-service center run by MEA, while POPSK (Post Office Passport Seva Kendra) operates from select post offices for certain services. Both accept applications.
