Canadian Permanent Residence can be obtained through several pathways: Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades), Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Family Sponsorship, or other immigration programs. Express Entry is the most popular pathway, using a points-based Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Use the IRCC eligibility tool to determine which immigration program you qualify for. Calculate your CRS score using the online calculator to estimate your chances under Express Entry.
Take IELTS (General Training) or CELPIP for English, or TEF/TCF for French. Results must be less than 2 years old at the time of application.
Have your foreign educational credentials assessed by a designated organization (WES, IQAS, etc.). This ensures your degrees are recognized as equivalent to Canadian standards.
Create your profile on the IRCC online portal with all personal, work, and education details. You'll receive a CRS score and be placed in the Express Entry pool.
If your CRS score meets or exceeds the cut-off in a draw, you'll receive an ITA. You then have 60 days to submit a complete PR application with all supporting documents.
Upload all required documents including police clearances, medical exam results, proof of funds, work experience letters, and LMIA (if applicable). Pay the processing fee and Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF).
IRCC will verify your documents, conduct background checks, and process your application. Track status through your IRCC account. Once approved, you'll receive the COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence).
CRS cut-off scores have ranged from 430–500 in recent draws. A score above 470 is generally competitive. Category-based draws may have lower or higher thresholds depending on the category.
For a single applicant, you need to show approximately CAD $14,690 in liquid funds. The amount increases with family size. These funds must be readily available (not locked in investments).
